Remembering 01-12-2010: When Haiti's World Turned Inside Out

I can't really remember when I heard, how I heard about it, who told me. Some people do. They remember where they were, how they heard about any tragedy, in their lives, personal or worldwide. I know people who can tell me the who, what, when, where, why and how of hearing about 9/11. I can't remember. Not about 9/11, not about hearing about the death of my great-grandmother.

Not about Haiti.

But I do remember the world absolutely exploding. Rushing to help, aid agencies at the scene, other news stories robbed of airtime, newspaper space, money being raised, coin drives, donations, prayer. It was talked about some at school, some teachers spending a lot of time discussing it, others not speaking of it at all. The whole world came together that week. So - what happened?

The news have stopped covering it. Donation boxes have disappeared. Dinner conversation has gone back to work, school and North American life. Gone are the news stories: "Canada donates $ (x-amount) to Haitian Relief Effort." The government isn't matching donations anymore.

We have forgotten.

But they still need help. One year later, Haiti still needs us! Please don't forget Haiti. We are reminded today because it's the one-year mark, but we need to remember them, and all other suffering countries everyday. We can't be blind to the poverty and suffering because we're all sitting here in our comfortable, luxurious North American lifestyle.

Please remember. Today, and always.

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

Born to a throne, stronger than Rome
But Violent prone, poor people zone
But it’s my home, all I have known
Where I got grown, streets we would roam
But out of the darkness, I came the farthest
Among the hardest survival
Learn from these streets, it can be bleak
Except no defeat, surrender retreat

So we struggling, fighting to eat and
We wondering when we’ll be free
So we patiently wait, for that fateful day
It’s not far away, so for now we say

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

So many wars, settling scores
Bringing us promises, leaving us poor
I heard them say, love is the way
Love is the answer, that’s what they say,
But look how they treat us, make us believers
We fight their battles, then they deceive us
Try to control us, they couldn’t hold us
Cause we just move forward like Buffalo Soldiers

But we struggling, fighting to eat
And we wondering, when we’ll be free
So we patiently wait, for that faithful day
It’s not far away, but for now we say

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

(Ohhhh Ohhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhh)
And everybody will be singing it
(Ohhhh Ohhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhh)
And you and I will be singing it
(Ohhhh Ohhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhh)
And we all will be singing it
(Ohhh Ohh Ohh Ohh)

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

When I get older, I will be stronger
They’ll call me freedom, just like a Waving Flag
And then it goes back, and then it goes back
And then it goes back

When I get older, when I get older
I will be stronger, just like a Waving Flag
Just like a Waving Flag, just like a Waving flag
Flag, flag, Just like a Waving Flag.
